Visiting New Orleans can sometimes feel like you are in over your head with excess. Bars open 24 hours a day; live music in the clubs and on the street corners and then there is the food, some folks raise their blood pressure just looking at the menus. Now, think about living in New Orleans and having that in your face 24 hours everyday. Working to find personal balance can be tricky in this city of celebration or as I like to call it, a city of professional socializers. But what does one do when a break is needed, even on a vacation, because isn’t that what a vacation is supposed to be; a detour from the daily stresses of live to unwind, relax and reconnect with your personal balance mojo. Well every Tuesday at the Southern Repertory theater there is a super cool gathering called Healing Power Hour and Community Mixer.
The Healing Power Hour and Community Mixer was started for folks to practice self care, but with limited resources. Each week is a two hour session broken up into two sections. The first hour is the mixer, with tea service or a rejuvenating mocktail( the event is drug and alcohol free,) Reiki (a healing technique based on the principle that the therapist can channel energy into the patient by means of touch, to activate the natural healing processes of the patient’s body and restore physical and emotional well-being,) Ear Acupuncture(Auriculotherapy is a form of alternative medicine based on the idea that the ear is a micro system, which reflects the entire body, represented on the auricle, the outer portion of the ear,) Aromatherapy(the use of aromatic plant extracts and essential oils in massage or baths) and massage. Each service is run by professionals donating their time as well as participating in the event. Dreamers Touch is the massage therapist and his sessions have prompted me to seek out personal sessions. Each service session is about 5-15 minutes and there are sign up sheets by each station.
The second hour is a group lesson curated by a professional in the field. Each week is a different topic and they range from Shamanic Drumming, to Mindfulness, Psychodrama, Meditation and each week it is different.
A 5$ donation is asked at the door as well as filling out a pre-session survey and then a post session survey to give yourself a quick check to see if anything has changed. So if you are in need of a couple of hours of relaxation, Tuesday’s 6pm-8pm, at the Southern Repertory Theater, 2541 Bayou Road. Take some time and reconnect with you!
