Domenica means “Sunday,” in Italian and historically Sunday is the day for family meals that include recipes, which require more time and preparation. Domenica has taken that theme and brought it to the restaurant offering dishes that speak to this Sunday Supper tradition.
While the menu is Italian, it has adapted to the contemporary palate of New Orleans. They offer fresh pastas made by hand daily, roasted vegetables, meats and Napolitano style pizzas, all prepared in the restaurant’s iconic wood oven. These dishes are accompanied by well chosen custom-brewed beers, seasonal craft cocktails and an Italian-focused wine list.
Domenica is my new favorite Happy Hour. You can’t beat half priced pizzas, wine and cocktails from 2-5pm daily! It is a bargain and one that I hope will stay around for many moons to come.
On a recent visit to the lovely restaurant located in the historic Roosevelt Hotel, we went for lunch. We were seated right away at a table in the center of the dinning room without a reservation. There was a strong odor that permeated the restaurant and I soon realized that is was the smell of roasted cauliflower, which is one of Domenica’s signature dishes. I have had the roasted cauliflower with sea salt and feta in the past and enjoyed it, but it’s not something I order often. Our waitress Jasmine was attentive but not hovering. The sparkling rose was a bit over priced but good. I enjoyed the Caesar Salad with shrimp, although the portion was small. The simple Margherita Pizza with tomato sauce, Mozzarella cheese and Basil had a thin crust and great flavor. Domenica gets thumbs up for simple consistency.
