Pirogue’s Whiskey Bayou

I drove back to New Orleans a few days ago with a post Thanksgiving resolve not to eat and drink so much. My traveling companion was a two-year-old Golden Doodle that I’m dog sitting for two weeks. As we came over the I-10 Bridge I saw the New Orleans skyline and I told the dog (Teddy), “This is going to be your home for a couple of weeks Buddy.”

He did not reply.

We got to my house and unpacked the car. Within minutes a friend called and asked if I wanted to try a new bar. I accepted and soon he and his wife showed up to fetch Teddy and me and off we went to Arabi.

We headed over the Inner Harbor Navigation Canal and down to 6940 St. Claude. Just ten minutes from the French Quarter. We pulled up to a rather plain modern building, but inside it had a long bar filled with characters and cigarette smoke, a pool table, dart board and arcade machines.

We took seats as the Bartender (Kelly) was cuing up an episode of Trailer Park Boys on a wide screen TV that happened to have been filmed in Pirogue’s Whiskey Bayou’s awesome back yard. Kelly explained that she even wore her St. Bernard Parrish Tee-shirt when they filmed the episode. I looked at the big screen and there was Kelly, wearing her Tee shirt and looking like a movie star. She was telling the Trailer Park Boys who were attending a genuine Louisiana Boil, that they could not vomit on the premises. Needless to say, the episode was hilarious and everyone at the bar felt the same.

We hadn’t been in the bar long when Kelly overheard us talking about Teddy. She said, “You have a dog in the car?”   I replied, “Yes.”  Kelly said, “Well, bring him on in!”

So I did. Teddy took to Pirogue’s Whiskey Bayou like a fish takes to water. He sat quietly at my feet near my bar stool and was the center of attention. Kelly gave him doggy treats.

I asked a guy named Jean (He had a shirt on with his name embroidered on it.) about Pirogue’s Whiskey Bayou and he replied, “Muriel Altikriti, Lisa McCracken and Kelly Scheeran were longtime Bywater bartenders who worked at Markey’s and BJ’s Lounge. They wanted to open their own bar for years, and realized lot’s of folks were moving to Holy Cross and Arabi, so they started looking here and found this place. There’s a lot of great stuff happening in Arabi right now.”

Jean’s right. Pirogue’s Whiskey Bayou is a dog friendly, neighborhood place with reasonably priced drinks, fun decor and a great back yard. Check it out!
