When it comes to interesting places off the beaten streets of the French Quarter, Bacchanal Wine fits the bill. This popular wine store, restaurant and music venue really has the corner market on being unique and fun. The old corner building and garden are not like any other place and they’ve made it into an inviting small piece of paradise. I enjoy riding my bike there. It is all about location and Bacchanal Wine is a primo spot on Poland Avenue in the Upper Ninth Ward.
Bacchanal Wine is famous for helping Katrina survivors after the flood by having guest chefs prepares dinner for all the neighbors working on the recovery efforts and also for tussling with the city of New Orleans over their live music parties. They’ve prevailed with the help of the neighborhood and friends and turned this amazing Pop-Up into one of the best places to dine and listen to music.
Bacchanal Wine has a menu described as Mediterranean minimalism. I’ve tried a few things on the menu and they were good, but what I found delicious and most interesting was the Chimichurri Sauce. I’m in love with this simple topping or marinade. The following is a very easy recipe for this fresh sauce.
- 1 bunch flat leaf parsley
- 8 cloves garlic, minced
- ¾ cup extra virgin olive oil
- ¼ cup red wine vinegar
- 1 lemon juice (juice of)
- 1 tablespoon diced red onion
- 1 teaspoon dried oregano (optional)
- 1 teaspoon black pepper
- ½ teaspoon salt
Pulse all the ingredients in a food processor. Use as a marinade or topping on meats, vegetable or bread. It is delicious.
