Bullet’s Sports Bar is a popular place where you can enjoy the best of New Orleans. If you’re interested in venturing away from the hustle and bustle of the French Quarter, this unassuming hole in the wall in the bottom half of a house, offers an adult atmosphere with great entertainment. There are no frills, andt the realness of the spot is what gives it it’s charm. I visited recently and was lucky enough to meet up with owner Rollins ‘Bullet’ Garcia Sr. He spoke with me and talked of the neighborhood history in his ‘old school’ style.
Everyone asks Bullet how’d you get your nickname, Rollins “Bullet” Garcia Sr.? He tells the story with a smile; “I got shot going to get a pack of cigarettes when I was 18 years old. They were robbing the place, and at that time the record, Eighteen with a Bullet was out. A friend of mine nicknamed me that, and it stuck with me forever.
The first time I went to Bullet’s Sports Bar, I came to see Kermit Ruffins perform. The neutral ground was packed with trucks and BBQ’s and locals were selling food to the folks arriving to see the famous trumpet player and man about town. Things have changed since 2011. Last week, we went to see Kermit on a Thursday and the Queen of Cuisine is now serving food out of the kitchen inside Bullet’s
I asked Bullet if Kermit Ruffins only plays Thursdays now?
Bullet said, “Kermit is like the weather. It can change. You know Kermit did have a ten-year stint here at Bullet’s on Tuesday, but now it’s Thursday. I only charge a cover when Kermit plays because Kermit is expensive.” (I’ve added the summer schedule to this article)
I encourage everyone to go to Bullet’s Sports Bar to enjoy the feel of a neighborhood hang out with world-class music, down home cooking, and where anyone under 30 is discouraged to attend without Adult Supervision.
Wednesday night is oyster night with a DJ. Thursday through Sunday the Queen of Cuisine offers up an array of southern bar staples. Get there early because the seating fills up quickly. Order yourself and your party a Set Up, which is a service of collective ingredients, such as ice, mixers, and glasses, necessary for serving various alcoholic drinks. Enjoy!
