Arguably the premiere craft beer bar in New Orleans, Avenue Pub is a beer lover’s institution with an enormous selection of beer coming from all over the world. Situated right on the St. Charles Ave streetcar line, it’s easily accessible for travelers, but you’ll mainly find a crowd of glass pint-toting locals gathering around its small tables and medium-sized wooden bar.
Unlike many other beer bars in the city, Avenue Pub constantly changes a large amount of its beer offerings—so often in fact that the pub keeps its rotating draft and bottle menus on clipboards that the bartenders change out regularly to reflect the latest selection. Patrons grab a clipboard and settle in to admire the dozens of beers on tap, including several new and rare kegs brought in each week, as well as more than a hundred of bottles, all of which are organized by type for easy browsing. The bar also has an impressive number of whiskeys and bourbons if you care for a stiff drink instead or to accompany your icy, frothy beer.
In addition to a fine selection of beverages, Avenue Pub has a working kitchen that serves up a short but delicious menu of bar food enlivened with fresh local ingredients and a creative flavor. On the appetizers list are hand cut fries served up in a few different ways, including the classic Dump Truck Fries, which are slathered with bechamel, roasted pork, grilled onions and port wine au jus. You can also have a sampling of St. James cheese, charcuterie and an olive plate.
One staple on the menu is a dressed up burger with toppings that vary from visit to visit, though it is now always made with regional Two Farms artisanal beef. From there, other burgers and sandwiches change from time to time, though they’ve included everything from fancy grilled cheeses and foie gras burgers to delectable sausage sandwiches. The kitchen serves these sandwiches with the option of hand cut fries or a salad, which comes with a house dressing that is simply out of this world.
