Revel in the Experience: Voodoo Music + Arts

In the top three of New Orleans festivals, Voodoo Music + Arts Experience (Nov. 1-3)—commonly referred to as Voodoo Fest—is held each fall around Halloween weekend and draws thousands upon thousands of attendees to City Park each year, now in its new dedicated festival locale within the park. The festival’s rich combination of music and art now pairs with camping, amusement park rides and the sometimes forgotten, but always dependable, menu of stellar local food.

The festival’s mainstay, its much anticipated music lineup, generally aims to please a younger crowd of 18 through 35, but many of its musical offerings can be enjoyed by music lovers of all ages. The lineup incorporates a large group of alternative and indie artists, local, national and international, as well as local jazz, blues and brass band musicians for one of the most well-rounded lineups you’ll find at any festival in the city.

Headliners include Pearl Jam, Nine Inch Nails, The Cure, Kid Rock, Calvin Harris and Bassnectar, plus dozens of other alternative, electronic, rock, indie, jazz, blues, brass band musicians and beyond. Notable local performers include the Preservation Hall Jazz Band, Dr. John, Glen David Andrews, The Revivalists, Quintron and Miss Pussycat, John Michael Rouchelle, Coyotes, The Scorseses and Big History, to name a few.

Another huge draw to Voodoo Fest each year is the plethora of art, both for sale by vendors and huge installations set up throughout the festival grounds. These displays are fashioned by local, national and international artists alike and use the landscape of the park and culture of Voodoo as inspirations. Some are multi-sensory with both visual and audio aspects of their design, and many are created with an emphasis on sustainability and reusable materials. While already beautiful in the day, some of these installations really come alive at night, adding to the experience of the festival throughout both the day and evening.

The food offerings are typical to any local festival and feature local restaurants, catering and food trucks all serving up their best to hungry festgoers. Additions to the traditional Voodoo Fest experience include camping right off the festival grounds as well as amusement park rides.

Tickets are available for single days, the entire weekend and VIP.
