We take our food pretty seriously down here. It’s a way of life and rightfully so, New Orleans is a city of restaurants. Seems like we are always talking about food. At the moment there are 1286 to choose from. They include the inexpensive corner neighborhood eateries that serve up New Orleans traditions like gumbo or a po-boy to the more expensive restaurants like Commander’s Palace, Arnauds or Galatorie’s where the waiters will pass their job down to their sons. . I always recommend having at least one grand dining experience and lot of local inexpensive dining experiences. It can be daunting… so many to choose from! I hope you find the restaurants recommended by your Garden District Bed and Breakfast to be helpful. As you will notice I have a tenancy to keep my guests uptown, it’s where the locals eat!
Uptown Fine Dining
A wonderful Uptown dinner destination that is both fun and refined. My favorites here are the Fried Green Tomatoes with Shrimp Remoulade and the Duck. Joann displays an amazing collection of her favorite New Orleans, LA art.

offers impeccable service and delicious classic Creole dishes. I always recommend this for the weekday lunch special so that you can experience the food, service, and ambience at a very reasonable price. Sunday Brunch is the ultimate, especially if you are dining on the magnificent patio. Try the Turtle Soup and Bread Pudding Soufflé. Dress code applys, no jeans or shorts allowed.

Frank Brigsten apprenticed under our famous Cajun Chef Paul Prudhomme. The restaurant, located in a little house in the Riverbend, serves some of the finest Louisiana cuisine. The rabbit and gumbo are my choices.

Another great establishment tucked away in an Uptown neighborhood. You’ll find lots of locals here. They do very good New Orleans style cooking and have an amazing wine cellar. Wait staff is chummy and efficient. We recommend the Fried Oysters with Brie and the Smoked Soft Shell Crab.

A very stylish Bistro with a short menu but exciting menu. It is located in an 1850 brick townhouse with an old New Orleans feeling. The mixologists makes extraordinarily good original cocktails, try the Bailout. I fell in love with the Watermelon Salad with Creole Tomatoes and Arugula. Also good was the Gulf Shrimp, Roasted Okra, Sweet Corn and Grits. This is a very happening place.

Uptown Neighborhood Eats
Offering the freshest oysters in town. Third generation runs this unique establishment known for its tiled walls and floors, not to mention, the bathroom, which is out back through the kitchen. This is a great place for lunch while shopping on Magazine

Where Bar-B-Que Shrimp originated. This famous Uptown/Garden District restaurant has been family owned since 1913. The oyster bar offers raw oysters on the half shell as well as great entertainment form the shuckers.

One of the busiest, small, and crammed cafés in town, not only because of the wonderful food, but also because of its warm and friendly atmosphere. Jack and staff make you feel as though you have stepped into their home and will ensure a delightful evening. The Shrimp and Alligator Sausage Cheesecake is awesome but so is everything else! Reservations for party’s of 5 or more.

You have to visit Ms. Tee Eva on Magazine St., where she’ll delight you with the creamiest pecan praline. This is my favorite praline in the entire city! Also try her sweet potatoe and pecan pies.

Ignatius is a little hole in the wall that serves good New Orleans home style cooking. Can’t go wrong with the crawfish etouffee, red beans or roast beef poboy. Outside seating available.

Offering a great food menu and fantastic wine and beer selection. French Fries fried in goose fat…oh my! This is only blocks away from Southern Comfort. Great place to start our evening with a glass of wine and cheese plate or a great way to end your evening with dessert, try the Chocolate Molten Soufflé. Outside seating.

Sometimes you just need a pizza! Theo’s offer a wood burning oven that produces a thin and crispy crust. They also serve excellent salads.

Muriel’s Jackson Square
Muriel’s presents an upscale Creole and Continental fare, a variety of rooms imaginatively decorated, excellent service and a wine list that boosts over 260 labels. This is a special evening’s restaurant overlooking the romantic Jackson Square. There is even a resident ghost.

For Italian in the Quarter we recommend Irene’s. Small and cozy dining rooms and a very reasonable wine list.
Mid City Neighborhood
Liuzza’s By the Track
The best New Orleans Gumbo can be found at another neighborhood gem, Liuzza’s By The Track. Billy serves it spicy and loaded with andouille and shrimp, it is my favorite gumbo in the city. He also does a nice lemony version of Bar-B-Que Shrimp. Can’t beat the cup of gumbo and half a po-boy for lunch.

Central Business District
If you are visting the WW11 Museum you must eat at Cochon. This is home style Cajun cooking. It is the only restaurant in the city that I know of that cures and smokes all their meats and sausages. Try the rabbit with collard greens or the fire roasted oysters. Great boucherie selections. They have recently opened a retail butcher shop and deli.
