Magazine St: New Orleans Shopping At Its Best

May 20th, 2013 by cindee

Antique Shop on Magazine Street

For many, shopping is one of the chief aspects of travel. Various major cities have specific strips that are especially conducive to shopping, and New Orleans is no different. In this city, it’s Magazine St that is lined with shops with a wide range of goods and souvenirs that visitors can bring home with them.

Magazine St sets itself apart from Canal St and even parts of the French Quarter, which are lined with many tourist trap-type shops that sell typical New Orleans merchandise like graphic T-shirts, shot glasses and refrigerator magnets. While there are some other streets in the city that may rival Magazine, such as Royal St in the French Quarter which is famous for its shops and galleries, Magazine St Uptown truly stands on its own in terms of some of the finer aspects of New Orleans shopping.

Magazine St starts at the end of Audubon Park Uptown and curves and stretches all the way downtown to Canal St, where it turns into Decatur St. Decatur is another popular street for shopping, though as mentioned earlier, many of these shops are more for tourists looking for your typical travel souvenirs.

Luck of the Irish: St. Patty’s Day Celebrations in New Orleans

March 10th, 2013 by cindee

Catching Cabbage!

Catching Cabbage!

Ask any native New Orleanian about their heritage, and you might be surprised by how often you’ll hear “Irish” as an answer. The large population of Irish folk has spurred long-standing traditions in the city to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day each year (ever heard of the Irish Channel neighborhood?). Donning their green, New Orleanians partake in various feats of revelry, from Irish food and parades to random kisses and the infamous green beer and catching all the ingredients for an Irish stew.

Many different Irish bars host their own version of a St. Patty’s Day party. Parasol’s just a few blocks off of Magazine St hosts their famous annual block party with lots of music, beer and food, which starts on Thursday, March 14th and continues on Saturday, March 16th and Sunday, March 17th. Tracey’s on Magazine St hosts their own annual celebration with lots of green beer and plenty of entertainment on the same days as Parasol’s. During the parades farther down on Magazine St, bars like the Bulldog and Balcony Bar host huge parties as well with plenty of green beer, jello shots and the like.
