Books and Beasts: Fundraiser for SoFAB Culinary Library

Books and Beast Fundraiser 2013

It’s not news that in New Orleans, everything centers on food—and that includes books.  New Orleans Public Library has partnered with SoFAB (Southern Food and Beverage Museum) to create the first-ever culinary library branch of NOPL as a satellite branch, at a renovated building on O.C. Haley Blvd.  With over 9,000 volumes of vintage and contemporary cookbooks and food reference books collected by SoFAB, this is the first library branch in that neighborhood since the 1940s.  It’s intended as a way to celebrate cooking and the love of food, contributing to the area’s unique identify and culture.  It’s also part of what the NOPL is calling a “living collection,” passing down traditions to the next generation.

Our Blog’s Year in Review, Southern Comfort B&B 2012

As 2012 comes to a close, we wanted to look back at some of our blog posts from throughout the year. Here at Southern Comfort Bed & Breakfast, we aim to bring you some of the most interesting and useful information regarding the potential places, people, and traditions to look out for when you visit the city. In case you missed any of our posts throughout the year—and especially if you’re planning a visit to New Orleans and our B&B sometime soon—here’s a recap of some of our favorites.

Green Goddess in Exchange Alley and the Delachaise down the street are two of our favorites. And could you tell we love oysters? Between the Louisiana Oyster Jubilee, charbroiled oysters, and our “Slurping Oysters” post, you can’t miss our devotion to these delectable bivalves. We also shared some tips on where to find surprising local bar food and late-night dining options, which we also thought might be highly valuable to our guests.

Southern Food and Beverage Museum , New Orleans

You’ve probably never been to a museum dedicated to food and beverages before.   In fact, it’s almost certain you haven’t, unless you’ve been to Southern Food and Beverage Museum at Riverwalk Marketplace in New Orleans.  The Southern Food and Beverage Museum is the only museum dedicated to the history of food and beverages in the country.   The many ethnicities that have settled in New Orleans since its founding, as well as its physical location as a port on the Mississippi River, all came together to create an indigenous local culture, and of course, cuisine .  Located in New Orleans, intersecting at the crossroads of centuries of colonial rule followed by British-American dominance, SoFAB has a story to tell about how we have always lived life through what we eat.   In New Orleans, we love stories about food!   In many ways, it defines who we are. Eating is, after all, a universal activity. We are all about food  at Southern Comfort Bed and Breakfastlocated in the gorgeous Garden District of New Orleans.
