Literature is ingrained in the history of New Orleans, and many authors have lived in and loved the city, both visitors and natives alike. You can enjoy a few different festivals celebrating this long lit history and current state of reading and writing, and one is the upcoming Words & Music Festival this week and weekend, Dec. 4th-8th. The event centers at Hotel Monteleone (214 Royal St), including the lobby and Carousel Bar upstairs in addition to rooms upstairs.

Both established and up-and-coming writers alike join together with other scholars, editors, publishers and performing artists to share their passions of the art of writing and reading. You’ll find ticketed events to panel discussions, readings, writing sessions, manuscript critiques, book signings, music events and more. There’s even a black tie award ceremony for writers who win the prestigious Faulkner-Wisdom Competition, a creative writing competition of previously unpublished work in categories such as narrative non-fiction, short story, essay and poetry, among others.

Drink It All In: New Orleans’ Tales of the Cocktail

Who doesn’t appreciate a great cocktail? At New Orleans’ Tales of the Cocktail, hosts and guests appreciate the cocktail and its culture to the highest extent. With seminars, dinners, award ceremonies, tasting rooms and other special events, the week and weekend of July 17th through 21st will be purely about all things cocktails. And New Orleans is the perfect hub for such a festival, as it’s the city in which the first cocktail—the sazerac—was invented, in a pharmacy on Royal St in the 19th century.

Perhaps one of attendees’ favorite parts of the event, the Tasting Rooms include various tasting events hosted throughout each day of the festival. The Hotel Monteleone is a hub for many of these tasting rooms, but there are more at hotels and restaurants around the city. There are events like Midori’s Stairway to Melon, Indie Spirits That Rock, Whiskey Luau and Russian Drinking Places: “Party booze a’la Russ.” There are dozens to attend every day, and they usually last about an hour and a half, so pick and choose your favorites. Similarly, there are Excursions—one per day except Saturday—that last a bit longer and offer a different journey into the event’s selected cocktail(s).
