New Orleans Louisiana Area Attractions

Southern Comfort is in the heart of New Orleans where there are endless options of points east, west, north and south to explore by hopping in a cab, jumping on the trolley or arranging for a car.

We have provided you with links to but a few of the sights and sounds of the city

MUSIC

Listen to the R&B sounds of New Orleans at the Maple Leaf; Tipitina's Uptown, and Rock N Bowl on Friday and Saturday nights. You'll find lots of local brass bands at Donna's and good Jazz at Ray's Boom Boom Room and Snug Harbor. If you feel like dancing be sure to visit Rock N Bowl on Wednesday and Thursday nights for the best Zydeco around and Cajun dancing at Tipitina's on Sunday afternoon.

My favorite local musicians are:

Kermit Ruffins and the Barbecue Swimgers: Trumpeter and vocalist, Kermit IS New Orleans. He is a modern hipster with an old soul that emanates the warmth that is associated with New Orleans, LA Music. He blows serious trumpet on Armstrong favorites.

Marva Wright and the BMW's: Born and raised in New Orleans LA, with gossip background, big voiced Marva is a crowd pleaser with her powerful blues.

Rockin' Dopsie Jr. and the Zydeco Twisters: This man is the epitome of cool. Leads this high-energy performance as the washboard player. Quite the showman with his jumps and splits.

Theresa Anderson: Known for her violin and vocals who blends New Orleans R&B with contemporary Nashville sounds.

Irma Thomas: New Orleans own Soul Queen whose voice is unmistakable: strong, pure and rich.

Jon Cleary: This 40-year-old Englishman has called New Orleans home since he was 17. He has toured the country with the likes of Taj Mahal and Bonnie Raitt. Jon has the ability to write huge melodic funk anthems that have become contemporary classics in the city. At the same time, I have seen the incredibly talented pianist play a classical recording that has brought tears to my eyes.

Irvin Mayfield: Represents the great New Orleans Jazz trumpeter legacy who has become the cultural ambassador for his city and for jazz music. He is known for the 16 piece New Orleans styled version of a Latin jazz group, Los Hombres Calientes, and his own band, The Irvin Mayfield Quinet.

SHOPPING

One of my favorite places in all of New Orleans is Magazine Street where you can wander aimlessly through Antique Shops, Art Galleries, Auction Houses and Specialty Shops. And of course when lunch time arrives Joey K's is a must for a quick po-boys.

Don't leave town without visiting the Louisiana Music Factory located on Decatur in the Quarter where you'll find the largest selection of New Orleans and Louisiana music. Ask for Barry, who not only happens to be a great guy and my neighbor, but virtually knows all there is to know about our local music.
