A Stroll down Royal Street in the French Quarter

May 2nd, 2011 by cindee

Looking for an fun activity in the French Quarter that doesn’t involve the crowds, noise, and grime of Bourbon Street? You need only look one block past Bourbon Street to the upscale, exciting, and historical Royal Street. A walk down Royal Street will take you back in time as you see street performers playing jazz and dancing amongst the beautiful 19th century architecture that lines Royal Street.

While exploring the beautiful antique stores, art galleries, and unique shops of Royal Street there is one restaurant that is absolutely worth a stop. Grab some fresh local seafood at the Royal House, 441 Royal Street, 504-528-2601 http://www.royalhouserestaurant.com

New Orleans French Quarter Festival

April 3rd, 2011 by cindee

The French Quarter Festival summons unique music and an incredible amount of delicious food to New Orleans’ French Quarter, during the weekend of April 7-10. This festival is a perfect place to discover the unique charm and beauty of the French Quarter and New Orleans.

The French Quarter Festival, with 17 stages and over 100 performers, is the biggest free music festival in the South! You’ll hear many genres of music; jazz, gospel, brass band, cajun and zydeco and even a bit of classical. Some of our favorites include Kermit Ruffins, Bonerama, Baby Boyz Brass, Little Freddie King and Glen David Andrews.
n incredible array of food is offered at three beautiful venues: the old U.S. Mint, Jackson Square, and the Woldenberg Riverfront Park. The choices of food are endless and all worth a try. Get a taste of New Orleans unique culinary history while listening to some of the best music our country has to offer, but remember, the French Quarter festival is a relay, not a sprint. So pace yourself, and split up your food with music and your music with food.

March 29th, 2011 by cindee

Looking for the perfect romantic activity in New Orleans? Your choices are endless, but if the weather is nice, which it usually is, one choice is to watch the sunset at the Fly.
The Fly is a park that runs along part of the Mississippi River behind the Audubon Zoo. It’s the perfect spot to stretch out on the green grass and sip a glass of wine and watch the sun set with that special someone. Your Garden District Bed and Breakfast, Southern Comfort, has bicycles available so getting to the Fly is easy.

What a special year! Not only is this the 25th anniversary of the Festival but it is also a 100th birthday celebration for the famous playwright.

Tennessee Williams held New Orleans dear to his heart and often referred to her as his spiritual home.

Each year, actors, playwrights, poets, writers, and fans come together celebrate his life and works. This 5 day event is filled with art, live music, panel discussions, poetry readings, movies and much more. One of the most cherished event is the famous Stanley and Stella Shouting contest.

Another year passes

March 10th, 2011 by cindee

Another Mardi Gras comes to an end. We’re all moving slow now, a bit exhausted from all the preparation and celebration.  Ladders and chairs lean against the house….beads hang from the trees and power lines on the Avenue…out of towners sort though their teasures trying to narrow what will fit in that homeward bound suitcase…. goodbyes have been made to new friends met on the parades with shouts of see ya next year. Until next year!

Living On the Parade Route

March 1st, 2011 by cindee

It’s almost here.Anticipation pervades the neighborhood as we ready ourselves for the big weekend  ahead. The most colorful parades start tomorrow! Anyone living within a short walk, like our B&B;, are getting out the barricades and ropes to save parking space for family and friends.  This is a time you realize you have friends you didn’t even know. A nearby bathroom is a wonderful addition to the parade experience.

Mardi Gras Magic

February 22nd, 2011 by cindee

It’s carnival time and everybody’s feelin’ good!
This past weekend kicked off the first parades and has set the mood.  Everyone’s in the Mardi Gras spirit. Carnival music’s playing on the radio.  Front doors are decorated with colorful wreathes.  Huge strings of Mardi Gras beads hang from the trees and drape over porch balconies.  Houses are dressed in their finest green, purple and gold.  Bakeries fill the air with the smell of thousands of king cakes made every day for locals and out-of-towners. In the neighborhoods, music and marching rings the air as high school bands practice for the parades.
