Louisiana Basketball Greats

April 2nd, 2012 by cindee

Louisiana has its share of basketball greats, both players and coaches.   Superstars Pete Maravich and Shaquille O’Neal both played for LSU.   Robert Parish played for Centenary College in the ‘70s, although his time there flew under the radar due to a harsh N.C.A.A. sanction against the school under the subsequently repealed “1.6” rule.  He was elected to the Basketball Hall of Fame in 2003 and was also named one of the 50 Greatest Players in NBA History in 1996.    Bob Pettit, Jr., the first basketball player ever to receive the NBA Most Valuable Player award, which he received four times, was born in Baton Rouge in 1932 and currently lives in New Orleans. Coach Dale Brown led the LSU Tigers to Final Four appearances in 1981 and 1986 and was named College Basketball Coach of the Year in 1986.    Right now in New Orleans we’re hosting the national men’s basketball N.C.A.A. championship tournament at the Superdome through Monday night, April 2.  Let’s take a look at another local basketball star, Kim Mulkey.

Film Industry in New Orleans

March 22nd, 2012 by cindee

New Orleans is a cinematic city, steeped in visual clichés.  We all know about the feature films, television shows and television commercials that get made here. HBO’s Treme’ has shone a spotlight on the local music industry, and given quite a few locals work.  Right now, it seems everyone is either working in the film business in some capacity, or trying to avoid film crews!  But it’s not just the out-of-towners who are coming here to take advantage of our scenery and the Louisiana tax credit program for filming.  Talented young filmmakers who live right here are making acclaimed movies right here.

For example, Jeff, Who Lives at Home opened this past weekend nationally.   Directed by a pair of New Orleans brothers, products of Jesuit High School, and filmed mostly in Metairie (to look like Baton Rouge!), the movie has received great reviews.   It’s the latest in a series of several features by Jay and Mark Duplass, who wrote, directed and produced Cyrus and Baghead before Jeff, Who Lives at Home.    The movie, about a 30-year old slacker who lives in his mom (Susan Sarandon)’s basement in Baton Rouge , is acclaimed as a mature piece of filmmaking.

Jean Lafitte National Historical Park and Preserve

February 9th, 2012 by cindee

Although it’s hard to imagine running out of things to do within the New Orleans city limits, you  may desire a day of relaxation exploring South Louisiana’s famous bayous and rich history . Jean Lafitte National Historical Park and Preserve, named after the mysterious waterway smuggler himself, includes six sites in the area documenting the ecological, cultural, and political history of the region.  For those interested in experiencing the wetlands firsthand, the 23,000 acre Barataria Preserve outside of Marrero provides walking trails and waterway canoe access.  This is a great opportunity to see local flora and fauna up close and personal, including alligators and nutria, and the mild regional weather allows for year-round access.  Southern Comfort Bed and Breakfast, your New Orleans lodging choice, will happily help plan an outting .

2011 Jazz Fest Lineup

January 23rd, 2011 by cindee

The lineup is finally here! It’s bigger and across more genres than I’ve ever seen. There is  definitely something for everyone.  Don’t forget the Southern Comfort Bed and Breakfast can acquire tickets for our guests and friends at the gate price ( $43) which avoids the Ticketmaster fees. Big savings! Just let me know via email, deadline is March 15th.
Some of the 2011 Jazz Fest headliners are:

Jimmy Buffett – Bon Jovi  – John Mellencamp - Kid Rock- Willie Nelson – Robert Plant – Lauryn Hill – Jeff Beck – Tom Jones – Sonny Rollins – Cyndi Lauper – John Legend – Bobby Blue Bland –  Arlo Guthrie – Fantasia – Kenny G -  Gregg Allman – Robert Cray – Ricky Skaggs. I may go fight the crowds for Cyndi, Robert Plant and Keb Mo.

New Orleans Po’Boy’s at Domilise’s

August 7th, 2010 by cindee

Over the years , so many feet have lingered in front of the sandwich counter at Domilises’s Po’Boy shop waiting for the sandwiches, that a shallow, uneven hole has been worn into the linoleum- exposing flooring of the past.

The shop opened around 1929 as an informal neighborhood bar in a room attached to Peter Domilises’s house at the corner of Annunciation and Bellecastle Streets.  It was frequented mostly by Mr. Domilise’s countrymen from Sicily. Eventually they built a sandwich bar on the annunciation Street side of the room, selling po’boys exclusively.

After World War II, the business passed to the Domilises’ son, Sam. Sam was a civic leader in this working class Uptown neighborhood, and after hours, the shop became a sort of unofficial municipal meeting room, where members of the community would gather to discuss the pressing issues of the 13th ward.

Sam Domilises died in 1981, and now the shop is run by Dot Domilise- “Miss Dot” to anyone who’s been there more than once. It remains a humlberoom, with walls of wooden paneling and a drop ceiling. Behind the beverage bar is an informal beer cam museum, which showcases yellowing tin cans of Jax, Dixie and Falstaff.

Visit Houmas House, a River Road Plantation

May 11th, 2010 by cindee

We were able to sneak away last week for a day trip upriver to Plantation country. I had been wanting to visit the Houmas House to see the new expansion of gardens.

The gardens are alive with lush tropical plantings, seasonal flowers, ponds and fountains.  Seating venettes and statuary greet you around every turn as you stroll through  courtyards, inviting pathways,  and the lush green lawns of   the 32 acre estate. This is a very magical place. The centuries old live oaks, some over 450 years old , provide an escape from the sun and an ambiance that  brings you back to an era of long ago.. An era where sipping Mint Juleps in the soft glow of the filtered afternoon sun while  listening to the  sounds of the river traffic was the southern way of life.
