Valentine’s In New Orleans

February 14th, 2013 by cindee

New Orleans is the most romantic city in the country, don’t you agree? And you can see it in so many distinctive ways. We’ve got horsedrawn (or muledrawn) carriage rides through the lacy iron-adorned streets of the French Quarter; we’ve got the elegant St. Charles Avenue streetcar ride for $1.50, past the Victorian mansions and live oak trees and ivy-covered universities; we’ve got the free ferry ride from Canal Street across the Mississippi River, with the stately old-world façade of St. Louis Cathedral looming in the background, like something out of Disney, as you glide slowly across the river.  There are reasons so many movies get filmed in New Orleans.  We live in the prettiest European –or is it Caribbean? – town you’re likely to find in the United States.

After the Super Bowl

February 8th, 2013 by cindee

Super Bowl Barge

We waited, and we watched while our city was transformed for the 2013 Super Bowl; and we wondered whether it would all be worth it.  YES, it was!  So exciting that Super Bowl XLVII, between the San Francisco 49ers and the Baltimore Ravens, happened right here, where we don’t just know how to throw a party, we live a party.  For our tenth ever Super Bowl, now at the renamed and renovated Mercedes-Benz Superdome, we postponed a few Carnival parades, but the Super Bowl’s magic took over.  The weather was beautiful, and the whole town was scrubbed, shiny, and dressed up in its best clothes.  Is New Orleans “back?”  Yep, big time!  It was enough to make us cry during the game.  What about those commercials?

Superdome Super Bowl 2013: On the Road to New Orleans

January 28th, 2013 by cindee

2013 Super Bowl

Super Bowl 2013 is upon us, and this year, the city of New Orleans plays host to the biggest national sporting event of the year. Sports fans, media, celebrities, and thousands upon thousands of other visitors will flock to the city over the coming weeks to prepare and celebrate the culmination of the 2012-2013 football season.

The teams are set. The Baltimore Ravens will be facing the San Francisco 49ers, who happen to be a longtime rival of the Saints since a time when both teams were in the same division. Fans of both teams will come down for the game with tickets and/or jerseys in hand, and New Orleans will welcome them with open arms, despite past rivalries and dashed hopes of having the Saints in the Superdome Super Bowl (New Orleanians will smile through gritted teeth when Commissioner Goodell comes to town).

Superior Grill – The Tex-Mex Local Hotspot

January 21st, 2013 by cindee

margaritas

Located at St. Charles Ave and Amelia St in Uptown New Orleans, Superior Grill offers some of the most memorable (Tex)Mexican food and drinks the city has to offer. Founded in 1997, its convenient location on the St. Charles streetcar line (stop #21) contributes to big crowds and happy mouths for locals and tourists alike.

Superior Grill, affectionately known as simply “Superior,” creates authentic Tex-Mex dishes from scratch every day, from nachos and burritos to enchiladas, quesadillas, and fajitas. They use only fresh ingredients and hand-rolled tortillas, and they cook their meats over a mesquite grill to give it that unique Superior flavor. Their menu is expansive and includes at least five choices for just about every Tex-Mex specialty you can think of.

Next to their food, their margaritas have made them legendary and an instant favorite for many. You can enjoy either two-for-one or a large for the price of a small for both margaritas and mixed drinks every day during their happy hour from 3:30 – 6:00pm. Their Superior Margaritas are available with freshly squeezed lime juice either frozen or on the rocks, and you can choose between the standard blend, top-shelf tequila, or flavored versions. But be careful—once you have one, you’ll see the bottom of that cup more times than you’ll care to admit.

Tipitina’s – Where Live Music Meets History

January 14th, 2013 by cindee

tipitina's

This week, Tipitina’s (501 Napoleon Ave, Uptown) celebrates 35 years serving up some of the best live music the city has to offer. On the 6th, they hosted a Super Fais Do Do with Bruce Daigrepont. On the 11th, they featured Re:Orientation with Gravity A and friends. This weekend, their anniversary party on Jan 18th and 19th features a reunion of the Radiators as well as the Soul Rebels and Dirty Dozen Brass Band. On the 26th, the venue hosts The Nevilles, a longstanding New Orleans musical family. This selection of artists is just a taste of the quality live music that Tipitina’s might be hosting any weekend in New Orleans, and for the past 35 years.

New Years Resolutions – A To-Do List for Your Next New Orleans Trip

January 8th, 2013 by cindee

Taking a ride on the streetcar

For their New Year’s resolutions, some people vow to eat less or exercise more. Others vow to perform more acts of kindness or to work even harder to get that big promotion. And some people’s New Year’s Resolution is simply to visit New Orleans in 2013.

Whether you’re traveling for the Super Bowl, Mardi Gras, Jazz Fest, or New Orleans’ fall food fests, your next visit to the city should include a few of New Orleans’ favorite eateries and attractions. We’ve compiled a list of some of the traditional and lesser known sights, tastes, and sounds that should be on your to-do list the next time you visit:

1.       Eat oysters. Various restaurants around the city shuck some of the biggest and best tasting oysters in the world—sure, we’ll a little biased—so you’ve got quite a few options on this one. Whether its happy hour or dinnertime, you should check out places like Acme Oyster House, Felix’s, Royal House Oyster Bar, or Bourbon House in the French Quarter, Drago’s or Lüke in the CBD, or Casamento’s or the Blind Pelican Uptown. And just about all of them are accessible via the St. Charles streetcar line just steps from Southern Comfort B&B.

2.       Live music on Frenchmen St. Bourbon St may be a top destination for many tourists. And while the strip admittedly has a few decent jazz clubs, Frenchmen St is one of New Orleans’ hidden treasures. The Blue Nile and d.b.a. consistently host some of New Orleans’ favorites of all genres, and you can catch other up-and-coming acts at the Maison (check out their huge window showcase of the musicians performing on stage) or the more intimate, acoustic atmosphere at the Apple Barrel. Located at the far edge of the French Quarter from Canal St, just follow Decatur St all the way down past Esplanade Ave.

Our Blog’s Year in Review, Southern Comfort B&B 2012

December 30th, 2012 by cindee

As 2012 comes to a close, we wanted to look back at some of our blog posts from throughout the year. Here at Southern Comfort Bed & Breakfast, we aim to bring you some of the most interesting and useful information regarding the potential places, people, and traditions to look out for when you visit the city. In case you missed any of our posts throughout the year—and especially if you’re planning a visit to New Orleans and our B&B sometime soon—here’s a recap of some of our favorites.

Food and restaurants are one of our favorite aspects of New Orleans culture, and we featured plenty of both throughout the year. Green Goddess in Exchange Alley and the Delachaise down the street are two of our favorites. And could you tell we love oysters? Between the Louisiana Oyster Jubilee, charbroiled oysters, and our “Slurping Oysters” post, you can’t miss our devotion to these delectable bivalves. We also shared some tips on where to find surprising local bar food and late-night dining options, which we also thought might be highly valuable to our guests.
