Magazine St: New Orleans Shopping At Its Best

May 20th, 2013 by cindee

Antique Shop on Magazine Street

For many, shopping is one of the chief aspects of travel. Various major cities have specific strips that are especially conducive to shopping, and New Orleans is no different. In this city, it’s Magazine St that is lined with shops with a wide range of goods and souvenirs that visitors can bring home with them.

Magazine St sets itself apart from Canal St and even parts of the French Quarter, which are lined with many tourist trap-type shops that sell typical New Orleans merchandise like graphic T-shirts, shot glasses and refrigerator magnets. While there are some other streets in the city that may rival Magazine, such as Royal St in the French Quarter which is famous for its shops and galleries, Magazine St Uptown truly stands on its own in terms of some of the finer aspects of New Orleans shopping.

Magazine St starts at the end of Audubon Park Uptown and curves and stretches all the way downtown to Canal St, where it turns into Decatur St. Decatur is another popular street for shopping, though as mentioned earlier, many of these shops are more for tourists looking for your typical travel souvenirs.

Bayou Boogaloo: Food and Fun on Bayou St. John We’re nearing the end of the spring festival—and the sprin

May 13th, 2013 by cindee

Bayou Boogaloo

We’re nearing the end of the spring festival – and the spring weather—and before summer begins, Bayou Boogaloo (May 17th-19th) squeezes one more festival into the mix. The festival was founded during the evacuation of Hurricane Katrina and evokes the passions of the city—music, food, art and celebration—during a weekend-long free event, rain or shine.

A favorite for many, this festival benefits from its unique location on the Bayou St. John in Mid-City, which presents a picturesque backdrop for the fest. It also provides a cool way for visitors to enjoy the festivities—from boats and rafts right there in the bayou.

Four stages host dozens of the city’s favorite musical acts and other events like family yoga, massages and workshops for kids. You’ll find everything from blues and zydeco to indie and brass bands on this year’s lineup, plus a performance from Fleur de Tease to wrap of the fest Sunday night. The full lineup can be found on their website.

April Showers Bring May Flowers

May 7th, 2013 by cindee

Jasmine in Bloom

Jasmine in Bloom

After a rainy and unseasonably cold spring, May has arrived and promises a wealth of gorgeous and wonderfully scented flowers that will beautify gardens and walkways. With New Orleans’ rich, tropical and subtropical climate—particularly in the hot, humid summer—it is only natural that flowers of all shapes, sizes and colors should come to bloom here. There are too many to name, but there are a few that stand out and which you can’t miss when you visit the city.

The gardenia is one of the most well-known and most popular flowers you’ll find. Before you see it, you’ll likely smell its unique fragrance wafting by you, particularly in the streets of the French Quarter and other stretches of homes with ornate gardens. It is a spring and summer-flowering plant, and its predominant month is May. It is also referred to as cape jasmine if you ask around town.

The magnolia is perhaps the most prominent flower representing New Orleans, as it is the official state flower of Louisiana. You can find many magnolia trees with blossoms opening up throughout the season, but also others as it is actually an evergreen. It has a lovely, unique smell and a large and distinct shape that you won’t miss if you pass it. The Magnolia has inspired names of buildings, gathering sites and even a Mardi Gras Indian tribe.

A Day at the Fest: New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival 2013

May 2nd, 2013 by cindee

Jumpin Johnny

While the possibility of afternoon showers threatened last Saturday’s Jazz Fest celebration, the day turned out to be a hot but beautiful one—one full of breathtaking music, incredible food and all the friendly passersby you could meet wishing you a “Happy Fest!”

The walk up to the Fairgrounds from your parking spot  is one of the unspoken moments of fest fun. Together you join ample fellow walkers all streaming from different tree-lined blocks, some carrying chairs, others carrying beers in coozies and others carrying nothing but the bright, summery clothes on their backs.  You know that the excitement of  Jazz Fest is in the air and all around you.

I always have to run to my favorite food first. Folks don’t realizr that some of the food at the fest can only be found at the fest.  So not only are you anxious to see some good music, your taste buds are screaming  for Mango Sorbet,  Crawfish Strudel, Crawfish Monica …just to name a few of my favorites. And the strudel is as good as always!

Fabulous Food Fare at the 2013 New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival

April 23rd, 2013 by cindee

Jazz Fest Logo While for many the main draw to the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival may be the incredible daily lineup of live music, for many others, the food selection reigns king. This is for good reason too—Jazz Fests vendors pull out all the stops, including local restaurants and caterers, some of whom prepare and serve their food for Jazz Fest exclusively out of the entire year. The offerings are wide-ranging, absolutely delicious and are a proud showcase of the food that represents the city. This year there are nine areas of the festival where you’ll find food and drinks—as well as mini stations throughout the grounds—to keep you going throughout your long day at the Fest. Spread out throughout the fest, you can hardly turn around without having these vendor stands in eyeshot, though a few areas are more prominent and varied than others. Food Area I, near the center of the map just passed the race track, and Food Area II, on the left side of the festival grounds in the center of the track, are by far the largest collection of food booths, where you’ll find the majority of your Fest dining options.

Café Degas: French Creole Fare at the Fairgrounds

April 22nd, 2013 by cindee

If you’ll be in town for this year’s New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, you’re likely looking for food options outside of the festival grounds. For a delicious meal of French and Creole cuisine in a charming, cozy spot near the Fairgrounds, Café Degas on Esplanade Ave is a sure bet. They serve up lunch Wednesday through Saturday, dinner Wednesday through Sunday and Sunday Brunch (just call ahead for hours), so you can enjoy their cuisine either before or after your Jazz Fest experience.

The restaurant is named after the 19th century French impressionist Edgar Degas who lived down the street in this quaint Creole neighborhood. The building itself houses tables both indoors and outdoors in a covered space that is pleasant even while it’s raining. You can enjoy the pleasing atmosphere of the restaurant against the lush, historic backdrop of Esplanade Ave while dining on splendid Creole-influenced French fare. The inside is small but cozy and intimate with the feel and appeal of a French bistro.

As one of the top three annual New Orleans festivals and the largest free music fest in the South, French Quarter Fest remains a favorite in the hearts of many of the city’s visitors and inhabitants. It’s a weekend in which an entire section of the city is transformed, from street to sidewalk to green space, into a boisterous celebration of local culture: food, music, art and more. This upcoming four-day weekend, April 11th-14th, the French Quarter will open its doors to hundreds of thousands of attendees to celebrate its 30th annual festival this year.

If you’ve never had the chance to go to French Quarter Fest, you can expect to see, hear and taste some of the best that New Orleans has to offer. With more than 800 musicians and food from 65+ local restaurants, you’ll enjoy a heaping taste of New Orleans culture any day of the fest—and more if you visit for the whole weekend.
