Uptown Gems

Welcome Uptown! This unique area of New Orleans is rich with history, streets filled with picturesque oak trees and serves as a quaint getaway from the debauchery that can often occur in the French Quarter. Despite its relaxed setting, Uptown has a plethora of award winning restaurants, speciality bars and outstanding music venues.

Steps from our bed and breakfast ,Southern Comfort, hop on the St. Charles green street car line to take in the landscape with ease. Once on board, marvel at the Greek Revival architecture, the varying holiday home decor, Loyola and Tulane’s campuses and find a place to enjoy a cocktail or a leisurely bite. The Columns Hotel, a must see spot on St. Charles, has been featured in several Hollywood films and offers an expansive front porch to relax at as the streetcar glides past. Across the St. Charles neutral ground, Superior Grill has a daily happy hour with potent frozen margaritas and The Delachaise has an expansive wine selection with upscale bar food.

If an ideal vacation requires a dose of retail therapy, a visit to Magazine Street should be at the top of the list. There’s something for everyone to enjoy on this uptown road: from sophisticated home furnishings by Discoveries and Hazelnut, to affordable fashion finds at Armoire, Buffalo Exchange and Feet First or costumes galore at Uptown Costume & Dancewear, Miss Claudia’s and Funky Monkey.

Once an appetite has been worked up, Magazine Street is surrounded by culinary delights. On the restaurant heat map, an experience at Shaya is worth the often difficult attempt at a reservation. As a back to back James Beard award recipient, Alon Shaya presents incredible Isralei fare and continues to collect accolades. Cavan, a newer restaurant venture brought by Sylvian, Barrel Proof (also on Magazine) and Meauxbar’s Robert LeBlanc, has recently claimed to be haunted but the southern, coastal plates make one forget any scare. Further Uptown, Kenton’s is an oyster and bourbon focused establishment with a popular happy hour and impressive dining options. A few blocks from Kenton’s, Avo showcases Sicilian influences and the chilled octopus is a must try!

After stops for cocktails & small plates, there are several iconic music venues to check out Uptown. Tipitina’s is a legendary space that books local and national acts for its spacious setting. In the Riverbend, Southport Hall keeps a full calendar with themed parties, music related fundraisers and Louisiana bred acts. Don’t forget to see Rebirth Brass Band at Maple Leaf on Tuesdays and The Soul Rebels on Thursday at Le Bon Temps Roule!

Enjoy the Uptown stay and revel in scouting out just a few of the hidden gems of the city that exist outside the French Quarter!
