October Festivals

October is finally here!  We have had our first cool and life is so good with less humidity. Now it’s time to get outside and enjoy the local festivals.

October 7-9  The Voice of the Wetlands is hosted by Tab Beniot in Houma. Being a true Cajun he is passionate about losing our wetlands. You never know who is going to show up and play with him. Enjoy regional music and food and help bring awareness to this grave problem.   VoiceOfTheWetlands.org
8 – Beignet Festival pays homage to this favorite french pastry. Come out and feast on new savory and sweet creations. Held in Lafayette Square. Beignetfest.com.

October 9-11 Gentilly Festival is located in my childhood neighborhood. It includes live music, a gospel tent, food and drink vendors as well as local  arts and crafts . GentillyFest.com

October 14-16 – Crescent City Blues & BBQ Festival is one of my favorite festivals. Located in Lafayette Square and easily reached by streetcar. This year will feature Taj Mahal, Jon Cleary, Tab Benoit and many others. Lots of good BBQ, local arts and crafts and drink vendors. JazzAndHertitage.org/Blues-Fest

October 22 – Krewe of Boo Halloween Parade Details are kept secret but as always you can expect a big time. This is the only parade with full size floats that is allowed to roll in the French Quarter. Lots of marching bands.  Come out with costumes.

October 23 – Oak Street Po-Boy Festival   celebrates the classic sandwich. So how can anyone think of something new to put between french bread?   You have to visit this festival to find out for yourself!  Each year there is  contest among the vendors and a new poboy is hailed .  Lots of food vendors, live music, and arts and crafts.  PoboyFest.com

October 28-30 – Voodoo Music + Arts Experience gets bigger and bigger each year. Spread out amongst the beautiful oak trees of City Park.
October 31 – Halloween is so much fun.  Everyone is costuming these days and the creativity is over the top. I especially like when groups of friends take on a theme. I spend my time wandering the streets with camera in hand.
