Domenica, located inside the sumptuous and historic Roosevelt Hotel in downtown New Orleans, serves some of the most delicious Italian food in the city. Owned by award-winning local chefs, John Besh and Alon Shaya, Domenica is renowned for pizza crusts that are crisped to perfection in a wood-fired oven, and topped with creative ingredients including beets, roasted carrots, Brussels sprouts, salsa verde, and even speck — boned ham leg rubbed in a mixture of salt and spices.
Before opening Domenica, Chef Shaya spent time in Italy honing his skills in preparation of rustic Italian favorites like pizza, pasta, and salami. Domenica features house made cured meats; a showcase sampler is the antipasti plate with salumi, cheeses, torta fritta and assorted sweets and savories. Try their famous roasted cauliflower appetizer: Domenica somehow makes the ‘world’s healthiest food’ decadent by first marinating the crispy vegetable, toasting the whole head in the pizza oven, and then serving it alongside an irresistible whipped goat cheese dip.
Although pizza is often the draw, Domenica also serves creative and bounteous pasta dishes, including squid ink tagliolini with blue crab and herbs, or pappardelle with saffron, oysters, cream and tarragon. Be on the lookout for seasonal pasta specials such as tortellini with sweet potato, roasted hazelnut, and brown butter sauce —a rich, sweet comfort dish that often appears on the fall menu.
Domenica hosts one of the most popular happy hours in the city, with half-priced pizzas, well cocktails, wines by the glass and beer from 2:00pm to 5:00pm daily. Happy hour can be a mob scene, so be sure and make a reservation to ensure you have the time and space to savor this casual dining favorite. Open daily: 11 a.m. to 11 p.m.
They have recently opened another location at 4933 Magazine Street.
