While for many the main draw to the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival may be the incredible daily lineup of live music, for many others, the food selection reigns king. This is for good reason too—Jazz Fests vendors pull out all the stops, including local restaurants and caterers, some of whom prepare and serve their food for Jazz Fest exclusively out of the entire year. The offerings are wide-ranging, absolutely delicious and are a proud showcase of the food that represents the city.This year there are nine areas of the festival where you’ll find food and drinks—as well as mini stations throughout the grounds—to keep you going throughout your long day at the Fest. Spread out throughout the fest, you can hardly turn around without having these vendor stands in eyeshot, though a few areas are more prominent and varied than others. Food Area I, near the center of the map just passed the race track, and Food Area II, on the left side of the festival grounds in the center of the track, are by far the largest collection of food booths, where you’ll find the majority of your Fest dining options.

If you’ll be in town for this year’s New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, you’re likely looking for food options outside of the festival grounds. For a delicious meal of French and Creole cuisine in a charming, cozy spot near the Fairgrounds, Café Degas on Esplanade Ave is a sure bet. They serve up lunch Wednesday through Saturday, dinner Wednesday through Sunday and Sunday Brunch (just call ahead for hours), so you can enjoy their cuisine either before or after your Jazz Fest experience.
The restaurant is named after the 19th century French impressionist Edgar Degas who lived down the street in this quaint Creole neighborhood. The building itself houses tables both indoors and outdoors in a covered space that is pleasant even while it’s raining. You can enjoy the pleasing atmosphere of the restaurant against the lush, historic backdrop of Esplanade Ave while dining on splendid Creole-influenced French fare. The inside is small but cozy and intimate with the feel and appeal of a French bistro.

As one of the top three annual New Orleans festivals and the largest free music fest in the South, French Quarter Fest remains a favorite in the hearts of many of the city’s visitors and inhabitants. It’s a weekend in which an entire section of the city is transformed, from street to sidewalk to green space, into a boisterous celebration of local culture: food, music, art and more. This upcoming four-day weekend, April 11th-14th, the French Quarter will open its doors to hundreds of thousands of attendees to celebrate its 30th annual festival this year.

New Orleans may not be directly associated with French cuisine, but the city boasts some great French fare in restaurants around the city. One such spot is Lilette on Magazine St, a quaint bistro with a fantastic food and wine menu, perfect for both lunch and dinner. Lilette is consistently ranked at the top of New Orleans restaurant lists by both critics and locals, and it would be a perfect spot to try some different foods when you visit the city.
Chef and owner John Harris is dedicated to finding the freshest seasonal ingredients available, so the special menu offerings may change at times. This allows for a fresh experience each time you visit. His French and Italian-inspired cuisine has been carefully crafted to bring out the best flavors in each component for a complex and delectable menu.
Their lunch menu reads like a portion of a dinner menu at any upscale restaurant.
