Tipitina’s – Where Live Music Meets History

January 14th, 2013 by cindee

tipitina's

This week, Tipitina’s (501 Napoleon Ave, Uptown) celebrates 35 years serving up some of the best live music the city has to offer. On the 6th, they hosted a Super Fais Do Do with Bruce Daigrepont. On the 11th, they featured Re:Orientation with Gravity A and friends. This weekend, their anniversary party on Jan 18th and 19th features a reunion of the Radiators as well as the Soul Rebels and Dirty Dozen Brass Band. On the 26th, the venue hosts The Nevilles, a longstanding New Orleans musical family. This selection of artists is just a taste of the quality live music that Tipitina’s might be hosting any weekend in New Orleans, and for the past 35 years.

Tipitina’s, founded January 14th, 1977, got its name from “Tipitina,” a song by Professor Longhair who performed there till his death in 1980, and who has been historically, and is still today, a local favorite. It began as a neighborhood juke joint founded by “The Fabulous Fo’teen” and has since grown into one of the biggest and best of New Orleans’ music venues.

On any day of the weekend, and often during the week, Tipitina’s hosts a variety of musical acts both local and national, and of genres across the spectrum. One night they may have a few local indie bands on the bill, followed by a blues night, followed by a DJ and jam band. This wide array of music has made this a favorite venue for music lovers of all stripes.

On Sundays, Tipitina’s hosts a Cajun Fais Do Do, its long-running weekly Cajun dance party. Bruce Daigrepont hosts a celebration of western Louisiana’s rich and colorful Cajun culture every week for dancers and Cajun music lovers throughout the city.

In addition to the venue itself, the Tipitina’s Foundation is also dedicated to promoting local musicians and music programs, especially those for children.  From the Instruments A’ Comin program, where musical instruments are donated and delivered to schools across the city, to the Music Co-op that serves up technology and training centers to local musicians, Tipitina’s is thoroughly engrained in local music culture and preservation.

Check out Tipitina’s calendar for shows coming up soon and around your next visit to the city!
