Off the Beaten path

January 30th, 2011 by cindee

A great way to see New Orleans is on a  bike. Get off the beaten path and back into the neighborhoods where you’ll experience a real feeling for the charming and unique architecture. We have brand new cruisers with big tires and baskets , a complimentary amenity for our guests.

Bike through the Garden District and admire the graciousness of the  architecture, stop and stroll through Lafayette Cemetery , than mosey on over to Magazine Street for shopping and lunch. Better yet, head further uptown to Whole Foods, grab a sandwich and continue on to Audubon Park and picnic on the banks of the Mississippi. Relax, stretch your legs and hope that you are luckily enough to see a huge ship pass as she navigates down the river.

2011 Jazz Fest Lineup

January 23rd, 2011 by cindee

The lineup is finally here! It’s bigger and across more genres than I’ve ever seen. There is  definitely something for everyone.  Don’t forget the Southern Comfort Bed and Breakfast can acquire tickets for our guests and friends at the gate price ( $43) which avoids the Ticketmaster fees. Big savings! Just let me know via email, deadline is March 15th.
Some of the 2011 Jazz Fest headliners are:

Jimmy Buffett – Bon Jovi  – John Mellencamp - Kid Rock- Willie Nelson – Robert Plant – Lauryn Hill – Jeff Beck – Tom Jones – Sonny Rollins – Cyndi Lauper – John Legend – Bobby Blue Bland –  Arlo Guthrie – Fantasia – Kenny G -  Gregg Allman – Robert Cray – Ricky Skaggs. I may go fight the crowds for Cyndi, Robert Plant and Keb Mo.

Mardi Gras King Cake – A Rich Tradition

January 17th, 2011 by cindee

Here in New Orleans we don’t refer to this time of the year as winter, we refer to it as Mardi Gras and King Cake time. This sticky pastry cake is one of the best known, symbols of  Mardi Gras and New Orleans. The origin of the king cake goes back to the 1800′s and is an interesting read. My history of this king cake dates back to grade school days. The beginning of carnival was marked by the first king cake party. Who ever got the baby had to have the next party that following weekend. Imagine a party guaranteed for months and paid for by your parents. If I recall, there were also spin the bottle games at those parties!Back then there was only one type of cake, hand braided and  loaded with cinnamon and creamy white icing.

Its Carnival Time in New Orleans

January 9th, 2011 by cindee

It’s that time of the year! The city is taking down Christmas decorations and putting up purple, green and gold. It’s a very magical and fun time. Being a native and taking all that our city has to offer for granted, we sometimes forget how these traditions are viewed from the outside world. Here is a list of questions that I am typically asked about  Mardi Gras in case you are  also curious about the basics of the celebration.
