Festival of the Bonfires

One of the regions most enjoyed Christmas event is the Festival of the Bonfires in Lutcher. This is  a short 45 minute ride from your Garden District lodging and will take place over the weekend of December 10th.

As the sun goes down, the call is made to light more than 100 wooden bonfires on both the east and west sides of the Mississippi River – a tradition that dates back to the 1880′s.

Some say that the christmas bonfires were a strategy to light the pathway for travlers on the river heading to midnight mass. Still others say they guide Papa Noel through the bayous as he delivers toys for the children. No matter which, it’s a great tradition.

The festival begins with three days filled with food, music and lots of  fun. The Gumbo Cook-Off, Bread Pudding Bake -off and Potatoe Salad Showdown while take place on Friday. Standard festival snacks, such as po-boys, jambalaya, and red beans and rice will also be available.
