New Orleans Botanical Gardens in City Park

June 30th, 2010 by cindee

The New Orleans Botanical Garden is located within City Park and was the first classical garden open to the public. It opened in 1936 with the help of redevelopment funds alloted by the national WPA program to help boost the nation’s economy during the Great Depression. The botanical gardens were revamped in the 1980′s, and it now contains over 2,000 species of plants from around the world.
The entire botanical gardens are composed of many miniture gardens, each with their own identity, including a Butterfly Walk, Lord & Taylor Rose Garden, Demonstration Garden, and Exotic Foliage. Maps are available to guide you through the gardens, and “Dial to Discover” stations allow one to use a cell phone to dial in and learn about different areas. They also offer a Spring and Fall lecture series for those interested.

June 13th, 2010 by cindee

New Orleans was the major entry port for bananas coming from Central and South America back in the 1950’s. Owen Edward Brennan asked chef Paul Blangé to experiment with bananas and find a novel culinary creation to promote the “exotic” imported fruit. Bananas Foster emerged as a hit dish and is still a New Orleans’ inspired favorite.

Until the next time you visit New Orleans, try this recipe at home.

Visit Magazine St in the Uptown/Garden District Area

June 7th, 2010 by cindee

Not far from Southern Comfort Bed and Breakfast, is a shopping area six miles in length including part of the Garden District and part of Uptown. Magazine Street features one of the top collections of antique stores, jewelers, art galleries, day spa’s, clothing boutiques, coffee shops and eateries.

Magazine is full of local character and charm. This stimulating street features exciting architecture – including everything from large columns of the Greek Revival to the playful colors of Victorian cottages accented with tedious gingerbread millwork.
